Special Interest Group Initiatives

Laois Partnership provides support to a number of disadvantaged groups and individuals. Support to people with disabilities include a range of educational, cultural and practical initiatives through the Disability Activity Programme. Activities include computer training, dance and art programmes, all of which promote independent living. The Disability Activation Programme has been developed to provide basic training to people with disabilities to progresstowards employment. Training includes dancing, basic computer, animation and graphic skills and is provided in consultation with disability organisations to complement existing services in the county.

Laois Partnership Company also provides English language conversation classes (Failte Isteach) to non-native English speakers and facilitates them with access to English conversation classes, recreational and cultural opportunities. The English Conversation sessions are run in conjunction with the Laois Offaly Education and Training Board and Respond Social Housing. The Men’s Shed programme is a men-only initiative whereby a safe, friendly and inclusive environment is made available for men whey they can gather and work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other men and where the primary objective is to advance the health and well-being of the participating men.

Partnership also continuously support and promote the work of Laois Traveller Action Group (LTAG) and assist them to capacity build their management committee. LTAG provide community development supports, advocacy and traveller health programmes throughout Laois and their activities include the publication of a traveller newspaper and workshops on various different activities.

This Sports Training programme, aimed at disadvantaged men, comprises an annual street soccer league and community coaching programme. Some participants from this programme progress on to certified training in FAI coaching skills, GAA coaching, IRFU coaching and Athletics Ireland coaching as well as First Aid training and Code of Ethics.
