In recognition of Ireland’s changing cultural landscape, Laois Partnership Company presented a Cultural Competency Training session to raise awareness of the importance for greater sensitivity towards other races.
Facilitated by Dr Salome Mbugua and Prof Egide Dhala from Akidwa, the training took place on 10th April in Bloom HQ in Mountrath.
Covering such topics as understanding the racial dynamics in cross cultural encounters, prejudice reduction, and the importance of having culturally competent staff, the workshop was an invaluable opportunity for service providers working with International Protection applicants, refugees and temporary protection applicants to enhance their cultural awareness, thereby building stronger and more inclusive connections. Themes such as cultural identity, unconscious bias, and relationship-building across cultural lines were touched upon, with Dr Mbuga and Prof Dhala sharing some of their own experiences.
