SERVICES TO ELDERLY PEOPLE

Since 2008, Laois Services to Elderly People (LSTEP) has promoted independent living for older people in Laois, empowering them to enjoy the best quality of life in their own homes.

This is achieved by offering supports tailored to their needs and requirements, such as the installation of personal alarms or repair and maintenance services.

LSTEP ensures safe and comfortable houses for older people, along with the emotional comfort of having someone to turn to when in need, as we offer advice on other services available to them that they may require and not be aware of.

The right to exercise choice is one of the most basic of all human rights, and sometimes, independence may be the only thing older people feel that they control. The ability to live independently empowers older people and reinforces a sense of control, engendering a feeling of achievement and self-worth that can have a positive effect on their mental health and wellbeing.

We work alongside the HSE in making older people’s homes safer by fitting grabrails and special stair rails when needed. We also work with and support Psychiatry for Later Life, St Vincent De Paul, Laois County Council, Laois Age Friendly, and Active Retirement Groups within Laois.

If someone with a low income requires help, we link in with Social Workers who make applications on behalf of the individual to Community Welfare Officers, St Vincent De Paul and Protestant Aid, to fund the services that can transform their home and its environs.
