A Boardwalk to Remember

This successful project to protect and restore Abbeyleix Bog, located in County Laois, Ireland, has been hailed as a model for community-centred peatland restoration efforts and recognized as a textbook example of sustainable peatland management.

Laois Partnership provided capital funding for the Boardwalk Project on Abbeyleix Bog and also assisted with the actual construction work through the deployment of the Rural Social Scheme. This project is an excellent example of promotion of rural tourism through the sustainable development of our heritage assets. This new addition to the bog will provide a great facility to the local community and additionally, it will contribute to Laois’ overall Tourism Product.

The boardwalk extends to 300 metres and was completed in June 2014.
